Thank you for attending Youth Lab for a Clinical Peel. Please take the time to carefully read your post-treatment instructions below.
POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
- Use only gentle cleansers, hyaluronic acid/hydrating or healing serums, gentle moisturisers, and SPF 50+ daily for 14 days. For intensive medium and deep peels please follow the instructions from your practitioner.
- Avoid any heat or sweat inducing activities, including vigorous exercise for 24-48hrs.
- Avoid applying makeup over the treated areas for 24-48 hours, mineral makeups are preferred.
- Avoid swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, saunas and ocean water for 72 hours.
- Do not use fake tan or spray tan for 7 days.
- Do not use any AHA or BHA, exfoliants or acidic based products for 7 days (eg Glycolic, Lactic, Salicylic etc) – gentle exfoliation may be used after this time.
- Do not use Vitamin A/Retinol products for 7 days (eg Retin A, Stieva A, Zorac etc)
- Strictly avoid sun exposure for 14 days. The treated area is more prone to sunburn and pigmentation change. Delayed blistering secondary to sun exposure has been noted up to 72 hours post-treatment.
- Do not shave the area until sensitivity has subsided.
- Do not pick, pull or scratch the treated skin. This can lead to scarring, infection and pigment changes.
- Avoid smoking/vaping for a minimum of 14 days. Smokers generally experience poorer healing and suboptimal results so cessation is recommended.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The listed below are all normal side effects and should self-resolve within a few days to weeks.
- Redness
- Skin shedding and peeling. The severity will depend on the strength of the peel.
- Purging of acne/pimples if there was an existing underlying congestion.
For further information on how to manage these side effects, please see ‘Management’.
MANAGEMENT
Cold Sores
Cold Sore (HSV) outbreak in individuals who are susceptible is possible even for those who have not had an outbreak in a long time.
Cold Sore Relief
- It is recommended these individuals take prophylactic antiviral medication available over the counter from their local pharmacy prior to and post-treatment.
Redness
After a treatment, your face will feel slightly red and irritated. In cases of deeper peels, your skin can appear pink for a few months after treatment. This is normal and expected post-treatment.
Redness Relief
- You can apply makeup after the treatment, ensuring it is applied with clean hands and/or a clean makeup brush.
Shedding or Peeling
After 3-5 days, there may be some mild skin shedding and peeling. This depends on the strength and depth of the peel and can range from almost nothing with a superficial lactic peel to 5 days of shedding for a stronger peel.
Please note that not all ‘peels’ cause visible peeling of the skin. Some peels produce a microscopic shedding of the outer dead skin layer which is not visible to the naked eye. The presence or absence of visible peeling does not impact the final results. In some skin types aggressive visible peeling of the skin is not advised.
Peeling Relief
- This is a normal and expected response post treatment. No management is required.
- Gentle exfoliation allowed 7 days post treatment
Purging of acne/pimples
If underlying congestion in the skin is present, you may experience some breakouts or pimples after undergoing any facial treatment. If this occurs, they are generally short-lived and resolve fairly quickly. Purging of acne and deeper congestion that may not have been visible to you prior to treatment is a normal response and indicative that the skin is responding.
Purging Relief
- Ensure you are adequately cleaning your face morning and evening with a recommended home cleanser.
- Do not pick or scratch at any breakouts.
- Keep your hands clean
The HEALITE II LED treatment in the clinic is a great option for those cases where purging is severe and not manageable with home remedies.
