Microneedling is often referred to as collagen induction or percutaneous collagen induction therapy.
It is an advanced skin treatment aimed at inducing collagen and elastin production within the skin’s lower levels, whilst at the same time refreshing the appearance of the surface of the skin.
Microneedling can be used as part of a treatment plan in conjunction with laser and light treatments and
It can also be used as a stand alone preventative and restorative treatment to maintain the skin’s integrity and quality.
Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can be adapted to all skin types and treat a wide variety of skin concerns.
Skin needling can be used for multiple indications such as:

Dermapen 4 Skin Needling
Different grades of skin needling can be used. At Youth Lab we use medical grade skin needling devices (Dermapen 4 and Mesoesthetic Mpen) which can go to different depths in the skin to target different concerns.
The Dermapen 4 is the newest addition to our range of devices here at Youth Lab and is a TGA approved medical device.
We also offer excellent add on infusions with skin needling which help with natural rejuvenation and regeneration of the skin, as well as tailored solutions to treat conditions such as scarring, pigmentation, skin laxity and fine lines.
Prior to any procedure we will discuss each patient’s individual concerns and tailor a treatment program according to their desired outcome. A recommended treatment course will be provided and regular follow-up ensured.
RF Microneedling
Radio frequency is one of the most widely studied and used technologies in aesthetic medicine to effectively tighten the skin, reduce wrinkles and stimulate collagen production.
As we age, we begin to lose collagen and elastin in the skin. In addition, the existing collagen fibres become disorganised and start to function abnormally. As a result, the skin loses its natural elasticity and flexibility, resulting in the formation of wrinkles, poor skin tone, loose and saggy skin with the loss of natural facial contours.
Radio frequency works deep within the skin by heating the skin to the temperature required to stimulate natural collagen production and effectively remodel the skin.
RF Microneedling is safe to use on all skin types and is the perfect solution for many aesthetic indications such as:

FAQs
What does the treatment involve?
Skin Needling: Following initial consultation the entire procedure will take approximately 45-60 minutes. In some cases there may be the application of a topical anaesthetic to ensure no discomfort during the procedure.
After your skin has been cleansed and prepped, the treatment involves the passing of a skin needling device over the skin which pierces the skin with fine stainless steel sterile needles.
Often some pressure over the skin may be felt with tiny tickling sensations. The procedure is generally not painful although many clients have different pain and discomfort thresholds to skin needling.
There may be pinpoint bleeding during the treatment depending on the depth of the needling, but no bleeding once the treatment has finished.
Genius RF Microneedling:
Following your consultation with our Doctor, Nurse or Dermal Therapist and the formulation of a treatment plan, you will be scheduled in for your procedure. We ask for you to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to treatment where your skin will be cleaned and a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied.
By using a topical anaesthetic, the treatment is much more comfortable. In some cases (if we are treating large and multiple areas) the doctor may decide to use injectable local anaesthetic or nerve blocks to make the procedure completely pain free. Once the skin is numb, the treatment commences, taking around 30-60 minutes depending on the areas treated.
The treatment involves passing the RF Genius handpiece over the skin. The handpiece has small gold plated needles which penetrate the skin and release the RF energy. The depth of the needles depends on the area of the body that is treated and the target aesthetic indication.
When the needle penetrates into the dermis, the radio frequency energy is delivered in a controlled and precise way to heat the dermis to the desired temperature while keeping the surface of the skin cool.
The treatment is occasionally uncomfortable however most clients find it tolerable. You will feel a heat sensation as the needles pass through the skin but due to the speed of treatment, this is not particularly painful.
Following the treatment, the skin will be red and possibly swollen. Post-procedure recovery creams and sunscreen will be applied. We also recommend the use of our healing crystal fibre masks and the Healite II LED following treatment. There should be no bleeding with the treatment.
Intensif RF Microneedling:
Following your consultation with our Doctor, Nurse or Dermal Therapist and the formulation of a treatment plan you will be booked in for your procedure. We ask for you to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to treatment where your skin will be cleaned and a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied.
By using topical anaesthetic the treatment is much more comfortable. In some cases (if we are treating large and multiple areas) the doctor may decide to use injectable local anaesthetic or nerve blocks to make the procedure completely pain free. Once the skin is numb the treatment commences, taking around 30-60 minutes depending on the areas treated.
The treatment involves passing the Intensif handpiece over the skin. The hand piece has small gold plated needles which penetrate the skin and release the RF energy. The depth of the needles depends on the area of the body that is treated and the target aesthetic indication.

Skin Needling: The number of treatments depends on the indication, however skin needling is best delivered over a series of 4-6 treatments for general skin rejuvenation. More sessions may be required for more sun damaged and scarred skin.
The treatments are performed at 2-4 weekly intervals to allow for collagen synthesis which takes up to 6 weeks. Following a full course of treatment, it can take up to 6 months for results to become visible due to the production and synthesis of new collagen and elastin. Maintenance skin needling treatments can then be performed.
Genius RF Microneedling:
Results of the Genius treatment may start to become evident in a few days with ongoing collagen production over the next 3 months.
Many people get noticeable improvements after a single session, however, consecutive treatments are recommended to encourage optimal collagen production and adequately treat individual concerns.
Every client is different and factors such as age, skin conditions, lifestyle factors and use of home care will affect the results.
We recommend an initial course of three to six treatments (more may be required) every six to eight weeks. This will encourage collagen production for up to eight months with very long-lasting results. Maintenance treatments can be discussed as required. We can often alternate treatments with our other treatments such as BBL Forever Young, skin tightening and contouring treatments for optimal results.
Within a few days to months after the treatment, the results will continue to improve with tighter, smoother and more refined skin.

What happens after my treatment?
Skin Needling: Immediately following the treatment the skin will appear red and inflammation will be present. Often clients report their face feels sunburnt and in the following 24-48 hours the skin may feel tight and uncomfortable. Strict adherence to the after care regime provided to you by our Dermal Therapists will ensure optimal results.
The downtime is minimal and aside from some redness and dryness, many go back to work the following day. The down time for your particular course of skin needling will be explained fully at your consultation.
It is important to follow your aftercare instructions and not to pick at any dry skin as this can increase the risk of complications such as scarring and infection. Protecting your skin from the sun and avoiding any active home care products (such as vitamin A) until advised is important as the skin is healing after the procedure.
Genius RF Microneedling:
Following the treatment, there should only be minimal discomfort or pain. There will be redness for up to 48 hours, or possibly longer (this is dependent on the intensity of the treatment).
You can expect the skin to feel warm and flushed with swelling to different degrees. As most of the energy from the Genius is delivered deep into the skin, there is minimal downtime and many can continue with their normal activities.
Full aftercare instructions will be provided after the treatment and strict adherence to these is essential to minimise discomfort and to ensure optimal results and healing.
Intensif RF Microneedling:

What are the risks of treatment?
Skin Needling: Pinpoint bleeding will occur during the procedure but should not persist once treatment has completed. The most common side effects of skin needling is increased skin sensitivity and erythema (like sunburn), bruising, crusting and light flaking in the days following.
In rare cases grazing, pustules and infection may occur. A rare but possible complication if hyper or hypopigmentation, however our dermal therapist will discuss this with each patient and offer appropriate and effective treatment if this were to occur including review by our doctors.
Skin needling is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women if anaesthetic is used or those who have been on a course of roaccutane in the past 6 months, active acne or inflammatory acne lesions, active infection or wounds. Precautions must be taken In those taking blood thinning medications (including aspirin and ibuprofen) and in smokers.
Genius RF Microneedling:
The Genius is a low risk procedure with minimal side effects. Downtime is expected due to the intensity of the treatment. Given the Genius has unique needles which require less passes during each treatment session, are thinner and sharper than other devices, there is a shorter treatment time and greater comfort.
As the epidermis is spared during the treatment the risks of post inflammatory pigmentation, hypopigmentation, burns and scarring are extremely rare. The treatment is generally safe in most skin types with treatment intensity easily adjusted for higher risk skin.
A full list of precautions and contraindications will be discussed at your consultation. Radiofrequency cannot be performed in those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have implanted metallic or electronic devices (eg pacemakers), current inflammation or infection and certain medical conditions such as active cancer, heart disease or who are immunosuppressed.
