We are always on the hunt for innovative and exciting new treatments at Youth Lab. In the cosmetic world there is a growing demand for safe, minimally invasive, effective treatments, with minimal downtime or discomfort. Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? Not anymore.
Some of the most common complaints we see in clinic are about the delicate eye area. From people struggling with dark circles, to hollow under eyes, puffy eye bags, fine lines and wrinkles and thin, lacklustre skin.
The eye area is such a huge concern for majority of the population because due to the delicate nature of the skin, it is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing through skin laxity, fine lines and loss of structural support. People start to notice these changes in their late 20s/early 30s with collagen and elastin in our skin decreasing every year, resulting in these concerns worsening with time. This can result in our eyes looking aged, tired and worsen the appearance of dark circles or hollowness.
Despite being one of the most common concerns for our patients it is one of the most difficult areas to treat.
So what are the treatment options?
Treatment options for the eye area have previously been limited due to the delicate nature of the skin, and safety in regards to proximity of the eye itself.
The periorbital area is the third highest ranking area for cosmetic surgery, with the most common eye procedures being either upper or lower blepharoplasty which is the surgical removal of loose skin to help with hooded eyes and saggy under eye skin. Surgery is an unappealing option for some, coming at a higher cost, with risk of scarring, and a more intensive post-operative recovery period. Plus some people simply want to avoid going ‘under the knife’
Wrinkle relaxers and dermal filler treatments can prove to be effective in rejuvenating the eye area, replacing lost volume and relaxing expression lines, however if skin laxity has occurred it can be difficult to truly improve the appearance of the eye area.
We see so many cases where people have had multiple treatments with dermal filler to the tear trough to ‘fill’ the under eye area only resulting in an overfilled and unnatural look with the loss of natural contours. Without actually addressing the delicate under eye skin no amount of dermal filler or anti-wrinkle injection treatment will give a good result.
A multifactorial approach is essential and the first step needs to be in improving the quality of the delicate skin, increase collagen formation long term and tighten the loose skin before any injectables are done.
THE PINCH TEST – A useful test is to pinch your under eye area – if the skin doesn’t bounce back to position quickly (like say the skin on your arm) then this means we need to focus on your skin quality in this area.
Introducing Radiofrequency
With the latest innovative radiofrequency technology, we can reverse the signs of fine lines, bags, dark circles, and skin laxity, as well improving the overall health and functioning of the skin and prevention of the signs of ageing.
So how does it work?
Radiofrequency allows the safe delivery of energy into the skin, regardless of skin colour. RF stimulates a build up of heat energy, which induces an immediate contraction of collagen and elastin fibres (giving you an instant lift) and stimulates the natural wound healing process, resulting in new skin cells, and new healthy collagen and elastin fibres.
When we concentrate this heat in the dermis and hypodermis (lower layers of the skin) the outcome is improved skin texture and quality, and tightening of any lax or sagging skin. The build up of energy causes the dermal levels of the skin to be heated to about 50 degrees celcius, while the surface of the skin remains at an approximate 40 degrees, similar to how it would feel in a hot shower. Personally loving my showers on the warmer side – I find this to be an incredibly relaxing treatment to get done.
What makes the Endymed different from the other radiofrequency treatments out there?
Without getting too technical, most RF devices on the market use monopolar or bipolar energy. The results using these technologies are variable, and patients are often exposed to high levels of epidermal (surface) heating and discomfort. This method of delivery also comes with more possible side effects, including burns and hyperpigmentation.
We have sourced on the best system on the market, the Endymed, which is a multi-source radiofrequency system that utilises a new multi-source energy delivery technique, using FDA cleared radiofrequency technology. The sophisticated software controls energy flow, forcing energy deep into the skin tissue without overheating the surface. This method delivers exceptional and predictable clinical results, with excellent patient comfort and a high safety profile.
As well as skin tightening through RF energy the device also utilised RF for fractional skin resurfacing, which is where the multi-source RF provides epidermal and dermal skin rejuvenation. This comes with much less downtime that traditional laser resurfacing procedures and minimal side effects.
By utilising this technology with it’s multiple treatment options we are able to carry out a non-surgical eye lift that delivers promising results with a high safety profile. The treatment is cleverly termed the “ENDY Bleph”.
The ENDYbleph Treatment
We combine two different RF treatments in the Endybleph protocol. It involves using RF skin Tightening and RF Resurfacing, which, when combined to treat the eye are, deliver phenomenal results.
The treatment involves 3 separate sessions spaced every 4 weeks. We start with the RF Skin tightening which involves multiple passes of RF energy over the skin which feels like a warm massage, followed by the more intense resurfacing treatment.
Treatment is focused on your areas of concerns but allows treatment under the eye to tighten eye bags and loose skin, next to the eye to reduce crows feet wrinkles and above the eye to tighten the eyelids and lift the brow.
As always, results are further enhanced with complimentary home care prescriptions.
An eye serum containing collagen stimulators and nourishing vitamins will ensure your skin has everything it needs to respond it’s best to clinical treatments. Our eye treatment of choice to partner with the Endybleph is the Cosmedix Eye Genius, containing firming peptides (signal messengers to collagen and elastin fibres), PFCs which attract oxygen to revive tired looking eyes, Borango oil and Vitamin E for soothing and nourishing, and Mica to instantly illuminate dark circles.
Results from RF are permanent, however with our natural ageing process depleting collagen and elastin every year, maintenance treatments are necessary. We generally recommend 1 maintenance treatment every 7 to 9 months. However, due to the zero downtime and endless benefits of skin tightening, it really is a treatment that can be incorporated monthly into your regular clinical routine.
This treatment is not a replacement for a surgical upper or lower blepharoplasty. Those with very loose hanging skin will not get surgical results. We recommend this treatment prior to any surgery or injectables to improve the skin health to optimise the results of more intense procedures if they are necessary. It is the perfect treatment for those who may also wish to delay surgery.
Results also depend on lifestyle factors and the initial skin condition. It is relying in YOUR natural collagen production so those with more sun damaged skin who have not used adequate protection, eat a poor diet, drink alcohol and smoke will not get optimal results.
